| Kia oraAs part of the National Remembrance Day for Survivors of Abuse in Care the Citizens Commission on Human Rights are co-hosting an event with Te Ata Mental Health Support Services at the Ellen Melville Centre (2 Freyberg Place, Auckland CBD) on Wednesday 12 November from 10am to 4pm. And on Saturday 15 November we will be at the NZ Collective of Abused in State Care Charitable Trust (NZCAST) event in Frank Kitts Park, Wellington waterfront from 10am to 5pm. At these two events we will be showing new displays that depict some of the psychiatric abuse of human rights that has taken place in Aotearoa New Zealand. Rather than being a backwater, leading New Zealand psychiatrists conducted extreme experiments using various forms of electroshocks, lobotomies and deep sleep treatments from the 1940s onward. The abuse of children at Lake Alice Hospital is now recognised as torture, but it was not alone in extreme psychiatric abuse and torture of people in this country. If you want to find out more, come along to the Ellen Melville Centre, Auckland, on Wednesday 12 November or Frank Kitts Park, Wellington, on Saturday 15 November, and see the new displays, and please let others know too. |
